Call waiting is one of the basic features that most VoIP phone lines like Vonage include that traditional off-line phone companies charge extra for, like in the case of Verizon.  And most people on Earth seem to know how to use it when a 2nd call is coming through — just click the switch hook on the phone handset/cradle or some phones have a “FLASH” button on the keypad.  You basically just keep pressing that button to toggle back and forth between the 2 simultaneous calls on the line.

However, most people don’t know how to TURN OFF CALL WAITING completely or at least TEMPORARILY DISABLE CALL WAITING for a given call that you’re about to make.  Here’s how…

HOW TO TURN OFF CALL WAITING PERMANENTLY FOR ALL CALLS ON YOUR VONAGE ACCOUNT:

  • Log into your vonage.com account
  • Select FEATURES from the menu bar at the top
  • Find the CALL WAITING module (1) on the page (right column)
  • Click on CONFIGURE (2)
  • You can toggle “Call Waiting Status” to either ON or OFF (3)
  • Click SUBMIT (4) to make your settings live

HOW TO TURN OFF CALL WAITING ON A PER-CALL BASIS WITH YOUR VONAGE ACCOUNT:

  • When you’re on a call, you’ll hear a BEEP that indicates another call is trying to ring your line
  • Depress the switch hook on the phone handset or cradle once — alternatively some phones have a “FLASH” button on the keypad
  • Just keep doing it to toggle back and forth between the two parties on the lines
  • Hang up like usual when you want to end all calls
  • If one of them hangs up, you will automatically be connected with the other party still on the line
