2007 has been the year of social bookmarking & Web 2.0.

 

All that hype simply means that there is a new breed of website that harnesses the collecative power of individuals across the internet.

 

 

With bookmarking, all this time, whenever you alone discover a new website that’s worthy, you add it to your Favorites or Bookmarks.  But with millions and millions of great sites out there, how can you really find the best ones all alone?  You are by yourself.

 

 

What social bookmarking does is basically collect everyone’s individual bookmarks and allow you to find similar sites for any given topic.  A “topic” is basically determined by “keywords” or “tags” assigned to each bookmark.  Whenever you submit a bookmark to a social bookmarking service, you “tag” it with keywords that describe the site or content you are saving.

 

 

One other big benefit is that you now have access to your bookmarks from ANY computer you are using, and your own personal bookmarks are searchable so that you don’t have to scroll down that infinite unorganized like of bookmarks you currently have on your web browser toolbar.

 

 

Most bookmark sites also have a toolbar that you can install so that you have have instant access to your bookmark account just as if it was part of the web browser program

 

 

Now the bookmarking site has a database of all sites filed under any given keyword.  So if you search for specific topics or keywords, you’ll be able to find out tons of other sites that the hundreds of thousand other users think are about the same thing.  It can be a much more efficient way of finding relevant sites for any given topic than using traditional search engines that don’t use humans to process and identify websites for you.
