Personal Technology Tips in Plain English
Secret of a Cell Phone Power User & Increasing Productivity
If you’re a student, businessperson, soccer mom or just a plain ol’ joe, this is one of the MOST PRODUCTIVE tips I have for anyone with a cell phone and a life.
Even if you’re not a fan of David Allen’s GTD, you probably use to-do lists for some part of your life or need reminders for various things from appointments to train schedules to pick-up schedules for the kids etc.
Now, you can supercharge your cell phone to remind you and give you the information you need at your fingertips, when you need it. . .this is clearly one of the best personal productivity tips I personally use with my cell phone.
There’s finally a free service from gopingme.com where you can schedule future pings to yourself (or others if you link with friends or families’ phones/email accounts) with any details you want via email or sms text message. What’s more is that you can “snooze” the reminders that arrive for any custom set of time just by replying with the snooze time period.
Another neat feature is that you can set reminders that “pester you” until you turn them off (say to put your clothes in the dryer), or set recurring pings that occur daily, weekly or monthly.

The cool part is that you can set pings on the fly from your phone (or via email) by simply sending a 1-line message to the service — this is so practical since you can immediately remove that newly brainstormed subconscious memory task and send it to your ping list exactly when you think about it.
The gopingme service is free to use. And with my current cell phone plan, I can have 200 text messages a month free, so that allows for about 5-7 pings a day before I have to cough up any more change — completely reasonable. Not all pings have to go to your cell phone either. You can set-up multiple “targets” such as multiple cell phones or email addresses (work or home or even my cell phone email account so I don’t have to pay for text messaging!) and then choose which “targets” get a reminder as you schedule it.
It’s great for birthday reminders, or car-pool pick-up schedules, or dry cleaning pick-up, or you can even set-up grocery lists so that you’ll get pinged with the list to buy before the end of the work day so you’ll know exactly what to pick-up at the store on the way home from work.
Of course there’s a plethora of ways that you can use this free service. What other creative uses can you think of using for this reminder service?
