If you’re smart, you’re already signed up for the MediaMax 200 or Unlimited data plans for your Samsung Blackjack which is just $20 more per month — they give you unlimited data, email, web usage on your Samsung Blackjack.

However, not everyone needs unlimited data, and if you’re on one of the limited data packages, you probably want know on any given day if you’re close to your limit or if you’re already over your monthly data usage quota. . .

Now, there’s a free service from AT&T Wireless that allows you to check your remaining data-usage allotment directly from the phone.  Here’s how to get a rough estimate (it’s not real-time, but pretty accurate according to AT&T Wireless customer service) of data usage for the currently monthly billing cycle:

  • Dial *DATA# from the main screen (*3282# if you haven’t memorized the traditional telephone keyboard lettering)
  • WAIT a couple of seconds and you should receive an incoming text message
  • Go to your MESSAGING > MMS/SMS
  • Read the message with the details of your current data usage

If you’re on an unlimited plan and consistently find that you’re using very litle data (possibly if you mainly use it just for email), then you may be better off downgrading to a limited data plan and save a couple bucks a month.

Just like the check your minutes balance (and rollover minutes counter) service, this text response service on AT&T is a very handy one to remember and use.
