How To Make WiFi VOIP Calls On Your Cell Phone

Convergence is hitting the cell phone.

Walt Mossberg just wrote about T-Mobile’s launch of the wifi/cellphone that automatically switches from one to the other whenever you enter/leave a hotspot.  If you start a call on wifi and leave the hotspot coverage area, it automatically switches the call over to the cellular network and vice versa.  But what if you don’t want T-mobile?  Or want to make voip calls on your own smartphone?  Here’s how. . .

My friend that has the Nokia e65 with Wifi capabilities loves this feature becuase he’s a true internationall caller and international calls over VOIP are tons cheaper than billed by the carrier.   Plus voip is so much more reliable that spotty cell phone coverage in many areas – especially inside buildings.   He’s tipped me on truphone.com previously but now there’s an even sweeter reason to try it out — TruPhone is now giving unlimited calling to 40 countries until the end of the year.

If it’s that easy and calls are free without any long distance charges, shouldn’t you be going over to truephone and downloading the app right now?  And since you’re making calls over the WiFI connection vs. the cellular data connection with the carrier, it should be OK according to the Terms of Service Agreement of companies like AT&T Wireless which prohibits VOIP on their own data network.
