The v-fax service is not free to Vonage users. It is included in the unlimited plan, and it counts against your outbound minutes if you have a per minute plan.

If I need to send a fax of 3 pages or less I use It is truly free. If I need to send more than the two faxes allowed in a day, or a fax over 3 pages, then I have to choose between v-fax and maxemail. I have a number with maxemail that lets me receive up to 100 pages per month for $24/yr. However outbound faxes are 5 cents a page. If I’ve got plenty of vonage minutes left, I’d use v-fax, if not I would probably use max email.

    Thanks for the info…

Mike, fortunately i have an unlimited vonage plan, so I’m looking forward to using this.. I use efax to get my faxes for free. (but like yours, I have to pay to send them). Will look into as well.

the site never works anyway, tried and tried , and always there are errors, unknown status, u name it, not one sent fax copy yet

  4. Free Fax says: is another website that lets user send free fax online to the US and Canada. User can either upload a PDF/Word file or enter text to fax. Plus, it does not add Ads to the fax, which makes it more suitable for faxing formal documents.

Vonage V-fax is very unreliable. Remember it is an alpha release which is before a beta. Wish they would fix V-fax because faxing over voip don’t work either.

@Mike Hardin, thanks for the heads up about maxemail. I like their pricing of $24/year for basically free inbound fax numbers and then $0.05/page outbound faxing.

Sounds like a reasonable plan to use if you have a business or a consistent need for outbound faxing.

Vonage V-Fax has worked for me, so I don’t have an issue with it.

If it fails, there’s always which gives you free outbound faxing without ads 10 pages at a time…

I see that the last comment from Kenny was many months back in July 2009, so maybe things may have changed. I couldn’t make vfax work. The instructions given to send a fax:
•Log into your Vonage account at the V-Fax page:
    •Enter the destination fax number
•Click “BROWSE” and find the document you want to send (any Word, Powerpoint Excel or PDF file)
I couldn’t go past the first step (I’m not even sure about that).
    – it say’s click “BROWSE” – I don’t see this so what do I click?
Long term I feel that fax is going to become a dinosaur, as is the land line, so any solution is probably good for another one year (maybe).
    Mind boggling isn’t it?

@Ram, you are right, Vonage removed the free vfax service from their “alpha” site.

The alpha site has changed into their “calling control center” — you can import contacts, etc now to have voice activated dialing. Just dial *44 and say the name of the contact in your vonage contact list and it will dial it.

You can initiate calls from the control center too.

Vonage does have a $9.99 fax line plan – unlimited inbound faxes included. And outbound faxing is supported. But the question is if faxing is really worth $120/year.

If you’re looking for free outbound faxing for minimal use, checkout for my current favorite service for outbound faxes (free too).

    Hope that helps!

Of course, if you have a regular line with Verizon, $120 is less than 2 months of service.
